Eric's Side Project - Grassroots Furniture Co.

A little cross-promotion here. Eric has been working hard on developing a new site to promote his side projects by the name of Grassroots Furniture Co.

As a gift to Eric, I made him this swanky logo to kick-off the launch of his site.  Check it out when you have the time. Totally worth the visit.

We Appreciate Your Patience

Many new developments have occured in the last few months however due a non-exsistant internet connection it's been nearly if not completely impossible to update. We continue to document changes with photographs, so rest assured, we will be back. Stronger and more consistant than ever.

Please note that we also plan to continue our "Backlog - Project" series when we return.

In the meantime, we leave you with one major update: Eric and I are engaged! With intentions on getting married in September 2012, there will be many more farm-updates as well as fun wedding crafts to share with you all.

Yay!

Stay tuned!

Backlog - Project 2: Chicken House!

And we're back! We've been desperate to update. Due to our not-so-ideal internet connection, it's been difficult. However, at long last, here we are with the next installment of our farmstead updates.

One of our larger projects we took on at the farm this (past) summer was the construction of the chicken coop. We purchased twelve five-month old chickens. Our chickens are split into two types: six are Leghorns and the other six are Barred Rocks.

Our very own Leghorn (left) and Barred Rocks (right).

Leghorns are among the most popular commercial strains of layer chickens worldwide. They are excellent layers of white eggs (roughly 280 per year) with a superior feed-to-egg conversion ratio (a Leghorn only needs around 125 grams of nourishing feed everyday).

Barred Rocks are dual-purpose, cold-hardy birds. These chickens are often called Plymouth Rocks, but this title correctly belongs to the entire breed, not just the Barred variety. They lay large eggs that varies in color from light to medium brown with a touch of pink. They generally continue laying all through the winter. As they are dual-purpose, they are both good for their egg production and meat.

We have yet to decide when or even if we will consume them for their meat. As it stands they are great layers and provide a lot of fun and companionship on the farm. Personally, I love how chatty they are. Eventually, we will experience the process, but it might not be with this group of chickens.

Along with the chickens we received a portable chicken coop that was being used to house the chickens. Not the most ideal coop, Damita and Eric decided to build another, more suitable home for our new friends. After two short weeks of hard work, their new and improved home was ready!

TA-DA! Welcome to your new home!

Backlog - Project 1: Operation Rejuvenate!

We last found our heroes, Eric and Chrissie, embarking on their journey to greener pastures. Eric was busy at the farm house, painting, patching and sweating - while Chrissie tied-up loose ends in Centertown.
Fast forward to today: We are now officially and comfortably nesting in our new home, happier than ever. After a lot of had work (mostly from Eric - I can't take all the credit) the house is now complete, allowing us more time to work on other farm projects.

But before I get into our other projects, I believe some before & after pictures of the farm house are in order (click on images to enlarge):

(Before - Prior to moving-in)

As mentioned in a previous post, Eric and I cleared out a (roughly) 10" x 10" garden space near the front entrance and planted all our perennials and fruit plants from Centertown. Next year, (future project) we plan on ripping up the patio stones near the front door and completely redo/finish the area!

Oh Gosh, Where Have We Been?!

So much has happened - our sincere apologies for neglecting you all for so long!

In the next couple of days I plan on documenting, with photographs, our completed & current projects that have been happening during the last five months.

Additionally, we have created a Facebook group to run parallel with our blog!

In the meantime I will leave you with this delightful picture. One of twelve chickens we received nearly two weeks ago.
